What is Venetian Plaster?

Venetian Plaster is made of slaked lime and crushed marble and is used to mimic the multi-toned, three-dimensional effect of natural stone and marble, eliminating the difficulties and higher cost of installing heavy slabs of marble or limestone. It’s been used for centuries and first became popular in the Roman Empire as a way to imitate natural stone surfaces inside palazzos, villas and cathedrals.

Although traditionally used as a building material, the main use of Venetian Plaster is now to enhance the interior design of a space, whether you’re after something rustic and traditional or going for a modern and contemporary look!

Eco-Friendly, Healthy & Durable

Venetian Plaster is not only popular for its striking and luxurious effect but because it is an environmentally-sound natural material, unlike many types of paint, sealants and stains. It is VOC (volatile organic compounds) free and largely uses reclaimed materials such as marble dust, as well as being effective at absorbing carbon dioxide which makes for healthier air and helps to reduce the carbon footprint.

Venetian Plaster is breathable and dehumidifying as it has the capacity to absorb any water present in the walls, whilst also having antibacterial and fungicidal properties due to the alkalinity of lime which prevents the survival of mould and mildew.

Both Venetian Plaster and Microcement are ultra-durable and don’t age or fade – a true investment.

Why Choose Venetian Plaster?

Great variety of stunning, sophisticated finishes

Venetian Plastering covers a wide range of exquisite finishes, ranging from highly polished finishes burnished to mirror-like reflection, to deeply textured effects that emulate natural stone.

Whether you wish to opt for something impactful or a more subtle effect, Venetian Plaster can bring your vision to life and can also be tinted, which provides endless colour options and is particularly useful when a very specific colour or shade is desired.

Ultra-durable and long-lasting

There’s a reason that Venetian Plaster is known as a “lifetime finish” – since it’s mostly made from Italian limestone and Dolomite marble, it’s incredibly durable and rarely cracks or shrinks. The breathability of the plaster also means it dries quickly so moisture is not retained beneath the surface, which also helps protect the building’s structure and supports its durability.

The cost of Venetian Plaster may seem higher than paint, but in the long run it’s undeniably more cost-effective.

Versatile

Venetian Plaster is one of the most versatile building products available! It can be applied to almost any surface as long as it’s flat, and can transform almost anything from existing walls and ceilings to old worktops and pillars into genuinely stunning structures.

Mould & mildew prevention

Venetian Plaster is breathable and dehumidifying as it has the capacity to absorb any water present in the walls, whilst also having antibacterial and fungicidal properties due to the alkalinity of lime which prevents the survival of mould and mildew.

Because Venetian Plaster is free from grout, there are also less nooks and crannies for mould to grow compared to using tiles, which means less maintenance required to keep it looking its best.

Environmentally friendly/healthy/non-toxic

Venetian Plaster is not only popular for its striking and luxurious effect but because it is an environmentally-sound natural material, unlike many types of paint, sealants and stains.

It is VOC (volatile organic compounds) free and largely uses reclaimed materials such as marble dust, as well as being effective at absorbing carbon dioxide which makes for healthier air and helps to reduce the carbon footprint.

As the lime plaster is applied to walls/ceilings, it gets exposed to CO2 in the air, and absorbs it. Once the mixture absorbs the CO2, it turns back into limestone again! With this unending cycle, the plaster becomes harder over time. It’s a win-win situation with less CO2, and stronger walls.

Customisable & bespoke

A huge benefit of Venetian Plaster is that it can be customised to work seamlessly with the branding of your business or the vision you have for your interior space! It is perfectly possible to incorporate specific colourways, finishes, designs, or logos through the use of stencilling.

Odourless

Unlike paint which is chemically produced and leaves a strong lingering smell, Venetian Plaster is pretty much odourless because it’s all natural with ingredients including lime and marble dust. You won’t have to keep doors and windows open for hours or days afterwards to try and clear any toxic smells.

Low maintenance

Venetian Plaster has got to be one of the easiest surfaces to clean – simply wipe the surface down with a damp cloth and it’s good as new. It’s best to add a wax finish when having your Venetian Plaster installed as this helps to repel dirt and grime from the plaster, which keeps it looking better for longer.
